To the northwest of Braidwood, about a mile east of Coal City, several small coal mines were opened. It was not long before many little miners' frame shacks began to appear on the landscape. In 1873 a village was organized and given the name of "Diamond." Coal is sometimes referred to as "Black Diamonds," because when the sun shines on the coal it does sparkle like diamonds.
